Women in Crete: Tradition, Myth & the Sea

A sunlit week of sea and story. We settle into Crete’s slow rhythm, wandering Chania’s old lanes, cooking in village kitchens, and learning from Cretan women who carry tradition, myth and modern courage in their everyday lives. From olive hills to hidden bays, gentle walks and time on the water bring you close to the island without rushing. Two cosy bases, time to breathe and evenings that feel like you’ve finally exhaled.

Day 1  Chania Apokoronas

You arrive in Chania and the island greets you with jasmine on the breeze, salt in the air, and sun warmed stone. In the Old Town, we’re waiting, ready to hold the logistics so you can stop managing and start exhaling.

We meet in Chania’s lanes for a hello hug, a short wander, and a first feel for the place before we drive into the green hills of Apokoronas, your home for the next four nights. At our retreat house, you drop your bags, find your room, and maybe step onto a terrace to breathe in the evening air. Then we gather for an unhurried drink and our first circle, names, small stories, and why you came.

Later, we head to the village for a long table dinner with shared plates, warm laughter, and your first taste of Cretan hospitality, plus olive oil that really does taste of sun.

Meals included:  Welcome dinner

Day 2  Chania

Morning arrives softly over the olive trees. We keep it calm: slow breakfast, coffee in hand, bare feet on cool tiles if you like.

Late morning, we meet Maria, our Cretan cook and teacher for the day. Apron on, hands in flour and herbs, she draws you into the heart of the Greek Mediterranean kitchen. You chop, knead, smell, taste, while she shares the unwritten rules of Cretan food – seasonality, simplicity, generosity – and how feeding others has been a quiet form of power in her life. We eat what we’ve made together around a table that feels more like a family gathering than a class.

In the afternoon, we stretch our legs with a gentle walk through Gavalochori. Stone houses, tiny courtyards, a kafeneio where time moves slower. If the weather calls for it, we head down to a north-coast beach for an easy swim and that delicious, salty-tired feeling, before gathering again for a relaxed dinner.

Meals included: Breakfast · Cooking lunch

Day 3  North coast

Today we meet the sea a little more closely.

After breakfast, we drive to the coast where our sea-kayak guides are waiting. No previous experience needed; this is about presence, not performance. You have time to learn how to hold the paddle, how to use your breath, and how to trust the boat. We paddle along the north shore, visiting quiet bays and small coves only reachable from the water. Rock, turquoise, the sound of the paddle dipping in and out. For some women, this day becomes a quiet turning point, realising they are capable of more than they thought, without needing to prove anything to anyone.

There is space for a swim, a simple seaside lunch, and a stretch on warm rocks. Back in Apokoronas by late afternoon, the rest of the day is yours: a nap, a book by the pool, a village walk. In the evening, we come together again for dinner and a short check-in circle where you can share what surprised you and what you noticed about yourself on the water.

Meals included: Breakfast · Light lunch

Day 4  Weaving and breathing

Today we spend time with Alexandra, a woman who has quite literally woven her life into this land.

After breakfast, we drive toward Rethymno to visit her small weaving workshop. Among looms, threads and patterns passed down through generations, she shares how she turned heritage craft into her own path. You see how colours and symbols carry stories of Cretan women: resilience, beauty, stubbornness, care. There is time to try your own hands at the loom or a simple textile technique. This is not about talent, but about touch, rhythm and watching something grow line by line.

The afternoon is open for a last village wander, a favourite café or simply rest at our retreat home. As the sun softens, we unroll mats for a gentle yoga session or guided stretch, nothing acrobatic, just breath and body and a chance to gather everything you have lived in these first days. We close our Apokoronas chapter with a quiet evening and dinner together.

Meals included: Breakfast

Day 5  South Rethymno & onward to Heraklion

This is your softer, more spacious day in the middle of the journey.

After breakfast and an unhurried morning, we drive toward the south coast of Rethymno. The landscape shifts from olive groves to rocky hills and the deep blue of the Libyan Sea. We settle at a beach that feels wild enough to be real, gentle enough to be restful.

Today can be as active or as lazy as you like. Swim, read, walk along the shoreline, or simply lie back and watch the horizon. Lunch is easy and local, taverna, sea view, the kind of food that tastes better with salty hair.

In the late afternoon, we continue east toward Heraklion and your final base near the ancient heart of the island. You check into your new room, take a shower, and feel the shift from village hills to a place shaped by thousands of years of stories. Evening is free or lightly guided, depending on the group, with the option of a simple dinner together or small pockets of exploring.

Meals included: Breakfast · Cooking-class dinner

Day 6 Archanes : Hills and wine

This day is about land and lineage.

We start with a gentle hike in the hills near Heraklion, around vineyards and low slopes that have held villages, myths and everyday lives for centuries. The path is easy and flexible, more about moving your body outdoors and feeling the island under your feet than chasing a goal.

Later, we visit a local winery run by two sisters. Among barrels and vines, you learn how soil, wind and hands turn into the wines you taste. It is less about technical notes and more about listening to the land and to the women who chose to root their life here, as we share a simple Cretan light lunch or meze alongside the wine.

The afternoon is open for rest, a nap, a café or a bit of exploring. In the evening, we sit down for dinner, letting conversation unfold in its own relaxed rhythm.

Meals included: Breakfast · Wine tasting

Day 7  Walking with stories, closing our circle

On your last day, we walk into the ancient story of Crete.

In the morning, we meet a woman guide who leads us through an ancient site near Heraklion, bringing history and mythology to life as you move between stones and pathways. She shares the stories of the women of Minoan and later Crete: priestesses, queens, everyday women whose traces are quieter but no less powerful. It is less about memorising dates and more about feeling yourself in a long line of women who have stood on this island’s ground.

Afterwards, we gather for a farewell lunch, one last Cretan table, one last toast, and a final chance to name what you are taking home with you. Then we close our circle and transfers take you toward the airport or your next stop, while the colours, salt, stories and women of Crete travel with you in your notebook, in your body and somewhere just under your skin.
